What is Task Management?
Task management is the process of managing a task through its lifecycle. It involves planning, monitoring multiple tasks on a project.
Importance of Task Management:
For successful completion of a project or operation, it is important to understand the underlying importance a task contribute to a project success.
- Understanding project requirements and identifying task to complete the requirements
- Project schedule and timeline can only be established after drawing up the detailed task plan
- Determine resourcing requirements to fulfill the task
- Determine Budget and estimates for a project
- Identify critical path – a path with the longest sequence of activities
- Identify Free Float, Total Float etc.
- Identify project risk and issues
And there are probably many points which makes task management so crucial for project success. In fact, it is the starting point of a project detailed planning. And all other project management methodology can only be applied based on task management.
Different type of Task and how to overcome its challenges.
Without really understanding the different types of task, it is going to be difficult for us to understand the challenges manager has to face to solve them
Non-Sequential
A non-sequential task is a group of a task that can be performed in any sequence. These are typically small projects where the project needs to be delivered in total. And the project manager has the choice to carry them in any sequence.
Sequential
A sequential task is those which forms a certain sequence. They can be arranged in a sequence one after another. There can be phased delivery of the project in a certain sequence. Such task can be monitored either placing them in excel or using a simple task management system.
Time constraint
Time constrain are usually sequential task which has defined the time of delivery. Or the ultimate delivery depends on multiple tasks at different time constraint. Such task can be monitored using simple Gantt chart tools. Identifying time constraint and monitoring them in excel may not be very easy
Time and multi-tasking
These are the most complex of all where the task is not only time bound but also parallel activities run simultaneously. They are an interdependent task and a delay in one task can further delay dependent task. These tasks can only be monitored with powerful Gantt chart tools. Complex construction and engineering activities are typical example sector managing multiple task and processes at the same time.
